Health Kicks: Free to attend

COVID-19 UPDATE: We regret to inform you that we have cancelled this club in line with current government guidance. The health and safety of everyone visiting our venues is our number one priority. We hope to be able to run this club again shortly, but in the meantime, we thank you for your understanding and patience.

Our Health Kicks sports programme offers the opportunity to access regular sporting activity to those experiencing mental health issues or accessing mental health services who are aged 16 and above. These sessions run in Ipswich throughout the week.

Our project aids rehabilitation, provides focus and routine, as well as increasing levels of health, fitness, and self-confidence. In addition, we improve the life chances of those involved in our Health Kicks project by utilising opportunities for social, professional and personal development.

Using football as the tool we deliver inclusive coaching activity that improves technical ability and game understanding whilst increasing levels of general health, fitness, and well-being.

This gives participants the opportunity to be part of a team, feel valued and develop all-important social skills. As well as having that normality in their weekly routine, that aids rehabilitation.

Here at Inspire Suffolk, we also offer exit routes into our Adult Disability Football Training and League that is affiliated with Suffolk County FA, thus giving community integration opportunities.

We currently run weekly sessions on the following days and times:

Days: Monday and Wednesdays (excluding Bank Holidays)
Times: 13:00 – 15:00pm
Venue: Inspire Suffolk, Lindbergh Road, Ipswich, IP3 9QX

Just yourself. Come in what you feel comfortable playing football in and good footwear that you can run in.

To join one of our weekly sessions you will need to contact our team at Inspire Suffolk by either calling 01473 353194 or by emailing [email protected] in advance of you attending your first session with us.

Should you wish to register someone on their behalf, please follow exactly the same procedure

Both males and females living with mental health issues aged 18+ living in and around Suffolk.

We work with those who may be experiencing mental health issues and service users based within hospitals (dependency wards), those that have been re-integrated into the community and those that may be on the cusp of developing mental health issues.

Increasingly, service users are providing peer recommendations to other potential participants, something that we intend to develop by way of a more ‘formal’ Ambassador role as we look to expand the provision to other parts of Suffolk.

1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem in any one year. In addition, 1 in 6 experience this at any one time, yet currently less than 10 percent accesses treatment. People with mental health challenges should have access to the same mainstream activities (in healthcare, employment, arts, and sport) as anyone else. Projects like ours are specifically designed to benefit those living with these challenges.

Sports projects – particularly using team sports like football – make it easier for people experiencing mental health problems to socialise. Social exclusion is often a key issue for people with mental health problems. This project has helped people get involved in their community through coaching and forming friendships with others. Research carried out by Mersey Care NHS Trust showed that over 90% of attendees to a similar project run by Everton had an improved sense of well-being and increased self-confidence. Many clinical staff believe that football projects can represent a high quality, value for money intervention that compares favourably with other treatments.
