Local young people from Leiston graduate and Inspire with their journeys

This week we are shining the light on the great work that our Leiston Prince’s Trust Team programme have been up over the past 12 weeks in their local community and boosting their skills ready for their next steps!

They started the programme by spending a week away on an action-packed activity residential trip in Norfolk. This gave the team a chance to break away from their current situation and realise their own individual strengths within their team. The group took part in lots of activities including raft building, archery, high ropes and various team building games. The residential is such an important part of the Team programme journey as this allows them to form as a team, discover new skills, and gain more confidence and much more.

The young people are also required to plan, raise funds and complete a project of their choice that will benefit their local community. This provides a great chance for the young people build more skills including leadership, communication and a project experience to add to their CVs.

To get things started, the group completed a bag pack at Tesco in Leiston to buy materials needed to complete their project. The young people decided to refurbish the footpath and woodland area at Sizewell Hall and started off by rebuilding the boarders of the footpath and relaying it with bark. They also added a bench that was donated from Coopers in Leiston and added some colour to the woodland walk by painting flower beds made of tyres and the wooden borders with bright coloured paint. They did just a good job at brightening up the area for the community and a big thank you to everyone in the Leiston community who supported them to make it a reality!

After working very hard on their community project, they took on two weeks of work experience with local employers including Sue Ryder charity shop, Bramley Lakes outdoor activity centre, CYDS drop in centre for young people, Benhall Pre-School and Country Care contractors. This provided such a beneficial experience to the group each suited to what they want to move onto in the future. The young people also took part in ‘work skills week’ where the team focussed on enhancing their CV’s and application forms as well as taking part in mock interviews.

During the last week of the programme the group hosted a presentation to family, friends, charity supporters and local employers who have supported the programme! Although being nervous about presenting, they all stood up to tell their journeys and their plans for the future.

Following the programme the young people have been able to secure jobs, apprenticeships, college courses and volunteering opportunities to pursue their chosen career paths and take their positive next steps. We’re so proud of the journey’s that they have been on and wish you all the best for your next steps. We look forward to hearing what you get up to!
